ambiguity, a manifesto
make of this what you will.
no matter which tongue, the language of the human heart is not one of contracts and legal logic.
it is instead one of nuance and subtlety and ambiguity, mist and clarity.
it is the realm of magic where wishes live.
but like all languages, you can say many things in it. you can curse and swear. you can say "I love you". you can say you don't understand or that you do. you can comfort or harm. you can expose in reflection what is out of reach. or you can present the truth like a goldfish in a bowl. and you can do all of these at once.
pretending this language does not exist, fixing words and meanings to fit into the "just" ruling of a legal document...
But don't misunderstand. Ambiguity is no good.
but is clarity (like of polished silver) good either?
i once believed ambiguity was a kind of protective veil. (and to some cowards it is only that!)
but there are more ways to speak a language than hiding meaning from your nosy relatives, like my grandparents using their yiddish to hide truths from their kids.
