thinking of characters that are ambitious but more proud than skilled
so like

like... ambitious but clumsy?
like a gutsy challenging entitled type who keeps getting bested by her nemesis/superior/older friend
(but they like each other, and the bottom (this is BL) becomes insecure like ... are you really trying to hurt me?
but the top wouldn't accept anything less than full effort (exacting retired general type) so he keeps the bottom at maximum anxiety and maximum pride)
and the older friend is like
"in order to become strong enough to defeat me, you can't rely on me to sharpen your wits for you. go train by yourself."
but secretly is saying (if you can deceive yourself of your ability... maybe you are deceiving yourself that you love me... and that would kill me... so I CANNOT let you trust in my love.)
what good duelist would seal their own exit?"
(the bottom is exactly that kind of duelist 😂. but thankfully isnt that good at sealing exits 😆)

both the top and the bottom are completely insane, because the top actually likes this (but is also terrified... because like, wow that's uh, that's scary???)

top: "shut the fuck up you keep singing old tunes and it's driving me crazy"
bottom: (ashamed, scared, sad, but just Doesnt Understand Malice, secretly to herself "i think it's because you like me and my voice makes you lovesick 🥰. don't worry, i'll keep my singing inside my heart")
(but she also worries... she maintains a kind of internal confidence with unusual insanity/confidence/delirium... but the top knows his weak points)
